Why It's Hard to Lose Weight As You Get Older

Some people have been in a constant struggle to maintain a healthy body weight their entire lives. Others are healthy in their teens and twenties, but struggle to keep off extra body weight as they age. Below are three reasons why it's hard to lose weight as you get older.

Not As Active

Athletes who struggle with their weight in the later years often reminisce about all the junk food they would eat without gaining a single pound. It's not an exaggeration when an athlete boasts about eating ten hamburgers without adding body fat. When you're young, and participating in strenuous sports your body has to fight to maintain it's weight.

For example, it's estimated that most soccer players will run up to five miles during a game. When you consider all the practice and training before games you start to realize how much energy your body would need to burn to support those activities. As you get older, your behavior changes drastically. Leisure time is less abundant, while most office workers spend the majority of the day sitting in a chair.

Can't Overcome Poor Eating Habits

Poor eating habits can be overcome if you're active enough, and constantly burning calories. As you get older and less active, those eating habits become the primary reason for additional body weight. You're likely to continue eating high calorie foods, because you believe based on previous experience that your body will burn it off. Unless you're as active as you were as a teenager, all those extra energy calories are likely to be stored as body fat.

Your Body Is Changing

The body begins to deteriorate as we age. Your bones, muscles and the efficiency of your digestive system changes. They're all contributing factors to how you utilize calories as you get older. Less muscle mass means fewer calories will be burned. Decreasing bone density makes you more susceptible to injury which impacts your ability or willingness to remain active.
