Prospective College Students Should Use Care Online

As you start applying to schools there are many different aspects that a college is going to look at. These days anything that you do or even say in the public eye may have more long lasting consequences than you may think. It may seem like just harmless fun but when it comes to creating an impact on someone, if you plan to have a positive one, there are some things that you should do to ensure that there is no trash floating around about you on the net.

In the first place it is best to stay out of trouble. This means avoiding illegal activities and staying out of the news. While it is acceptable to have your name in the paper for scoring goals in the high school varsity soccer game or for assisting at the local homeless shelter, getting press for driving while intoxicated or distracted may put an end to your college career before it even commences.

Next it is best to avoid using your actual full name on sites like Facebook and Twitter because the things that you and friends post may come back to haunt you. Instead use a pseudonym and keep your pages private. This will help to keep any unfavorable posts that are made from getting into the wrong hands. Keep in mind that it is not only your friends who can see this but anyone who looks you up on the web and even if you avoid posting negative information on these sites keep in mind that friends can tag you in a picture of underage drinking or other activities that may show a side of your life that you are not overly proud of.

Students today really need to realize that everything they are doing online can be viewed by many people and not just those that they want to see them. These public forums have ruined many a reputation and when viewed by a college recruitment officer could put an end to your dreams of getting into a top ranked school. After all, top ranked schools have their own drama and most definitely are not looking to take on any students that are going to bring more problems onto the campus.

Being accepted into a great college doesn't just take hard work but also some common sense. When it comes to assuring that you put your best foot forward be sure that you don't have anything negative on the web that could do a flip flop and bite you in the end.
