Custom Printing 101

There are four popular types of custom printing for garments. These methods are used whenever a new business needs hats with their company logo or a high school needs T-shirts for graduating seniors or a pee wee soccer team needs jerseys. In this article we will discuss the pros and cons of each method.

Screen Printing

Screen printing is the oldest and arguably the most versatile method we will discuss today. It has been around for nearly two thousand years and is also known as silkscreen printing. The process wasn't patented until the 19th century when it became a reliable industrial technique in England. Printers used simple wooden frames stretched with washable silk to which a design stencil was attached with a screen filter. Ink or paint passed through the silk and transferred or stamped the design onto the blank garment. Screen printing New York is the world's most popular method of custom printing.

Heat Transfer

While not nearly as old as New York screen printing, heat transfer has been around for decades. In recent years, computers have been used to produce design patches which are essentially ironed onto blank garments. Larger custom printers use a machine known as a heat press, but some smaller firms actually do use irons. Heat transfers produce higher quality prints than screen printing, but they are more expensive and they can take up to fifteen minutes for each custom garment. A skilled printer can produce dozens of custom garments using screen printing in that time.

Digital Cut out Printing

Digital printing for garments is a relatively new method. It relies on special laser printers that create high quality patches that are often made of vinyl. Like the previous method, it relies on heat to apply these patches to the garments. Most sports jerseys use digital cut for embossed numbers.

Direct to Garment Digital Printing

As the newest of the custom printing methods, direct to garment is both expensive and accurate. When it comes to quality, no other process can compare. It relies on state-of-the-art digital printers that have been modified to print directly onto garments. These printers can reproduce nearly any image, no matter how intricate or colorful.

The Final Verdict

Which method is best? Well, it really does depend on quantity, quality, and timeframe. Since most custom projects involve simple designs and large quantities, New York screen printing is the most popular choice. However, if you need a more colorful shirt and time is not a concern, you might consider heat transfer, since it is less expensive than either method of digital printing in New York.
