What Are Singing Exercises About?

Good singing is much more than just belting out notes. As such, singing exercises teach you more than just technique. They help in revealing the beauty in singing by combining natural emotion with technically accurate vocals. This emotion is expressed through subtle fluctuations called vibrato and the use of vocal registers.

However, the notes must be controlled so as to convey a warm, aesthetic quality. It's hard to develop this skill sans the guidance of professionals, as these singing qualities are only created through correct vocal placement.

In any given practice session, the exercises have to be chosen according at least in part on the requirements of the performance material to be rehearsed. Start by looking at your pieces and determine what skills they need.

If you're rehearsing a piece that calls for the extremes of your range, you will choose singing exercises geared toward that. If the material has a lot of fast runs or trills, you will do flexibility exercises. For a piece with many sustained notes, you would want to work on breath support and control.

Types of Singing Exercises

Different kinds of singing exercises are found. There are Singing Exercises for Low Range where one can learn about 'descending octave slides' and 'fifth slides'. There are also Singing Exercises for High Range where one can learn about 'Up and down arpeggios', 'Upward arpeggio and downward octave with turn' which is a more complex variation of the previous exercise and 'Upward arpeggio with repeated high note', another variation of the arpeggios.

There are also singing exercises for flexibility where one can learn about 'ascending triplet scales', 'ascending and descending thirds' and 'Rapid repeated up and down five note scale'. What most singing tutors like to begin with are the 'breath support and control' singing exercises where a student can learn about 'Buzz-slides' and 'Messa di voce'.

Warm-Up Singing Exercises

To get the best of singing tones, a singer's larynx and its supporting muscles need to be relaxed. One of the best ways of assuring this is through vocal warm-up exercises. You ever noticed at a soccer match how substitutes are made to run along the touchline and do exercises? That is to warm their muscles up to get them ready for the game!

Now, in the same breath as these athletes need to do warm-up exercises before their game, singers need to prepare their voices before a rehearsal or performance too!

Vocal warm-up exercises get the air flowing and relax your muscles to get ready for the more strenuous activity to come. It's perhaps the most effective way to prevent vocal fatigue and overuse damage.

It may seem counter-intuitive to suggest more exercises to prevent overuse injury? Yes. Your vocal folds are controlled by tiny muscles, and when they're warmed-up they are more flexible, easier to use, and less susceptible to injury.

Before starting your singing warm-up exercises, remember to always do some whole-body stretching and relaxation too.
