Basketball Ankle-Breaker Crossover Move

The Crossover Dribble

Millions of people play basketball all around the world. It may be the most popular sport ever, maybe even more than soccer. There is one basketball move, however, that only a few people can do successfully at full speed, and almost all of them are in the National Basketball Association (NBA) or probably will be.

That move is the crossover dribble. It is also known as the ankle breaker because the only way a defender can counter the move is to immediately change the direction and momentum of his entire body. The crossover dribble is a very low and quick bounce or dribble in front of the player. The point guard that has mastered this handle can fake to one side, and when the defender has taken the bait, push the ball to the other side and move right past him without breaking his stride.

The basketball player who can execute a crossover dribble at full speed is going to get to the hoop more often and he is also going to set up more passing lanes and give his teammates more good shots. Dunks and three-pointers look good but the ball handlers control the game.

Executing The Crossover Dribble

If you want to successfully execute the crossover dribble you have to be equally proficient at dribbling the ball with both hands. Some people are more naturally ambidextrous than others but just about anybody can learn how to dribble with both hands with enough of the right practice.

You have to learn how to dribble the ball at full speed without ever looking at it. Some defenders are pretty quick too and the way to get by a quick-footed defender is to keep your eyes only on him and make your move when the defender gives you his tell that he is fully committed to one direction. Once somebody has his body mass moving in one direction it is extremely difficult to change that direction in an instant. Recognizing the tell and shifting dribbling hands is the key to the crossover dribble.

If you have giant dreams for basketball this is a handle you must learn. You can do it with the right technique and the right drills.
