All Parts of a Team are Important
WC: Having the best defense will not ensure victory. Dominating the midfield means nothing if you can't score. Ten can be brilliant, but if the goalkeeper makes rookie-type mistakes, you will not win.
IT: You can have the very best applications, but if your service desk is weak, your entire IT operation will be perceived as sub-par. You may have invested considerably to ensure that all user interfaces are intuitive, but if response times are bad, the end user experience will be judged as poor. Achieving a balanced effort across all IT elements is a challenge, but is crucial to success. Using the latest technology to reduce costs and increase productivity - for example, through the use of a SaaS deployment model for your IT asset management (ITAM) and IT service management (ITSM) systems - will make it easier to achieve this balance.
ALL-STARS Can Only Get You So Far
WC: Many teams with expensive players, such as Ronaldo, Rooney, and Messi, dropped in the early stages, or failed to pass the first winner-take-it-all stages.
IT: In IT, there is the old saying that no one ever got fired for buying IBM. But doing so could leave you behind your competitors. The new, aggressive players (i.e. those that provide Web-era SaaS ITSM and ITAM systems, instead of antiquated legacy on-premise solutions) are playing to win. It is these innovators that can help your IT team stay ahead of the game.
There is No Place for "Untouchables"
WC: Some coaches included players that were past their prime. Perhaps they believed that some of the old magic would return. Or, they were concerned about criticism over leaving a long-time star at home. We witnessed Henry coming off the bench in a futile effort to rescue the French team. Yet, we saw 21 year-old Mesut Oezil emerge as a star in the German midfield. Coaches that made bold moves to leave out aging stars and introduce exciting new talent were rewarded.
IT: In many organizations there are "untouchable" systems or operational methods. There is reluctance to change - "why fix something that isn't broke?" is heard all too often. Successful IT managers are constantly listening and learning. They help their organizations "do more with less." They do this is by making bold moves to retire the "legacy" players, and introduce new, fresh, exciting technologies that truly make a difference.
Leading Edge Technologies Can Help You Get Further
WC: FIFA believes in the traditional referee role in a soccer match, and refuses to rely on technologies to help the referee validate his decisions. We saw clear goals that were invalidated simply because the referee did not have a good view.
IT: In IT, you have to rely on leading edge technologies to perfect and fine tune your game, so you can make the right decisions. For example, legacy, on-premise ITSM and ITAM software is a thing of the past, and new SaaS solutions are delivering much more value to today's businesses. You have to embrace technology - in spite of tradition - to stay competitive and make the right choices.
Don't Play With a "We Can't Lose" Attitude
WC: Some teams arrived in South Africa with an attitude or entitlement. Why? Because "on paper" they appeared to be stronger than their early competition in the group stage. This complacent, superior attitude saw Italy, the reigning champions, sent home early. It also contributed to the early exit of France and England.
IT: You have to constantly challenge the team to improve. The day that IT management believes they have overcome all major challenges is the day their downfall begins. There is no room for complacency. Staying abreast of new developments and continuously challenging the status quo will help ensure that you stay in the game!
