If you are unsure of how to make a business plan, there are many resources available that can help you. You can find business books at the library, which explain how to make a plan. You can also find information and business plan templates on the Internet.
Typically, most business plans simply help you answer the following questions:
o Why are you in this business?
o How would you describe your business?
o What is your marketing strategy?
o What is your operational setup?
o What kind of budget do you have?
Writing a business plan will help you get collected, by organizing your thoughts on why and how you're going to do the business, and the way you're going to do it. And that will lead to your daily and weekly planning, which is the way you're going to get things done.
Planning is part of the process of getting collected for your business. If you are not collected, it means you are not comfortable enough to get collected, and if you are not comfortable, you are not committed, and if you are not committed, then you haven't seen and accepted the challenge of creating your own business.
When you make a plan, be sure you're making a plan that you know you can follow. For example, if you are better at making marketing calls in the morning than in the afternoon, be sure you schedule time in the morning to make those calls.
Once you begin planning day by day, you must begin prioritizing. Break your goals into steps and ask yourself what steps have to be accomplished first. Then, plan what you are going to do tomorrow. You may only get to the first step of one of your goals. That's okay. You aren't going to get them all done in one day.
The first thing you have to learn when you are planning is how much you can get done in an hour, or two hours or all day. Not how much you think you should be able to do, but how much you can actually get done.
After your first day, look at what you have accomplished, and make a more accurate plan for the next day. Do this every day, and soon you will have a better idea of how much time to schedule for each activity.
Once you become more familiar with being an entrepreneur, you can establish a routine for planning.
For example, you could plan one week at a time. Let's say you go to your office every Sunday night, or Saturday afternoon or whenever it is convenient for you, and look at your calendar for the next week. Look at the holes in your calendar for blocks of unscheduled time.
Be sure that your calendar includes personal or family time, or else you are going to be scheduling a meeting when you are supposed to take your child to soccer practice. To plan properly, use one calendar for every-thing in your life - both business and personal - so you won't miss anything.
The blocks of unscheduled time that you look for can be as much as several hours, or as short as half an hour. If you have something to do that you could get done in half an hour, schedule it in. Look at your prioritized list of things to do and see where they can fit into your calendar for the week.
