Is Kelly Optimal For All Betting Tips?

Money management strategies help the punter to choose an optimal stake, and even though Kelly is known to be the best strategy of them all, it is not necessarily true for all types of betting tips.

This article summarizes possible ways to improve Kelly's strategy for different types of betting tips.

First, let's emphasize Kelly's strengths and weaknesses:

According to Kelly's, the wager for each outcome is calculated in the following way: w * (p-(1-p)/(odds-1)), where w represents the wealth of the punter and p is the probability of a win. For example, if your wealth = 1000$, p = 50% and odds = 2.5, then the wager your have to place is equal to 1000$*(0.5 - 0.5/(2.5-1))=166$.

If the probability of a win (p) is estimated correctly, then the calculated wager will be optimal in a long run. If, however, it is wrongly estimated, then using Kelly's won't do the trick.

What are the possible ways to improve Kelly's strategy when the probability of a win is incorrect or unknown?

When one's betting tips include a probability of a win, it is necessary to determine how accurate this probability is for home/draw/away wins. It can be done by ratio of several successive tips to the total number of tips provided. This ratio can be used as a correction factor for a wager estimated according to Kelly's. To use this correction factor it is enough to multiply the wager by the corresponding ratio. For example, if the accuracy ratio of the betting tips for a home win is 0.55, then when one bets on a home win, he should multiply his wager by 0.55 to lower the risk.

If one's betting tips don't include a probability of a win, he should start with estimating this probability. One simple way to do that is by calculating the ratio of home wins, draws and away wins to the total number of games in the season. These proportions can be used as probabilities of a win and no other correction factor will be necessary. This method is less accurate then the previous one, since it uses average statistics to estimate the probability of a win.

The methods described above help punters to calculate their optimal wager. However, these methods won't help you choose the outcome to bet on. For example, when you distribute your wager between two of three possible outcomes, the long run profit will be maximal. The only way to calculate the optimal wager for each outcome is by using data-driven algorithms. In this case, the wager should be distributed between matches whose outcomes can be estimated automatically given historical data only. The output of this algorithm is the value of the wager for each outcome. The optimization criterion for those algorithms is, of course, a maximal profit when betting odds are known.

Hallmark of Soccer Goalie Drills

I am a newly graduate of soccer goalie drills of my team. I was "the chosen one", as my coach would address me, to be the teams' goalkeeper. I was at first irritated when my coach passes on the ball to me and said: "Spend your next eight hours with your new best friend on the team". I told myself that as a player I should be cooperative with my coach but at that moment my blood rushes up through my and I wanted to yell at him. But then I controlled my emotions and looked seriously into the ball.

Soccer goalie drills is not a one step ladder as what my coach would tell me. It is a great task given to a competitive player. My task is completely pro team and anti opponents team. Even if my teammates fail to get on the lead of the ball, we could still score for a point if I make my move marvelous that is, not letting the ball pass the goal cage.

My first drill was the complete familiarity of the ball. You may say it is quite simple but you are mistaken. I must learn to juggle the ball with my hands, wrists and forearms to be able to build my strength and vigilance in ball handling. Alertness is very much needed because we always give the opponent that single chance to score and me, as a goalkeeper must be vigilant to compensate for my team.

Footwork soccer goalie drills were also part of my training. I need to run and embrace the ball before it turns to be a point in favor of our opponent. I have been able to develop my field vision and precision of the soccer field.

The hallmark of it all is what my coach told me as the golden rule of goalie drills. With me as the goalkeeper of the team must first set the goal in the mind of the attacker who holds ball and secondly on the goalpost.

"Our Workplace is Like a Family" - That's the Problem

What's the first organization you joined? Little League, a local children's group, a theatre troupe, childhood soccer or sports team, Boy/Girl Scouts, school, church? Well, actually, the first organization we all joined is our family. And in this organizational setting, we learned how to "be" - how to act, react and interact with authority figures, peers, and outsiders and how to create roles for ourselves amassing knowledge and skills we would later bring to our world, and the world of work.

Psychology, neuroscience and brain research more and more conclude that the patterns of behavior and roles we learned as children stay with us throughout life. Like it or not, we bring our family - our biography and our biology - to our adult life at work, at home and at play. Many of these roles and patterns are visible; however, many are invisible, operating on an unconscious level, often as "blind spots" and, as often as not, cause us and others upset, unhappiness and discontent.

Visible roles we learned as children are, for example: the athlete, the clown, the big shot, the goddess, the actress, the strong type, the bimbo, etc. Just look at the daily news, magazines, TV offerings and even the workplace for real-life examples of adults who mastered the roles they identified with as children and now play out dutifully as adults. These are roles we can see and touch.

Invisible roles are unconscious and contain certain assumptions, expectations, and emotions. While families do not speak outright about them, they have an unspoken agreement that they are what they are and affirm them by how they indirectly respond to them. Such invisible roles include: the bright one, the funny one, the pretty one, the weak one, the incorrigible one, "brainy" one, the good one, the compliant one, etc. Each of these roles comes with it's expectations and rules for how one is to play it out, e.g., be a straight-A student, be popular, make everyone laugh, be a troublemaker, follow the rules, please everyone, etc. It's the unconscious, invisible roles that cause us so much upset and difficulty in our adult lives. This role and pattern dynamic is true for all families.

All of life, even life at work, is about relationships. At work, if truth be told, it's our dealing with others that causes us and others the most pain, upset and conflict. And, the interesting note is that it's not about the other person so much as it's about who in our workplace reminds us of our original family. So, at work, we play our roles as we learned how when we were children.

Consider:

For example, when you experience a conflict at work and someone is loud and angry, do you shout even louder to make your point, or go silent and look away and feel defeated or deflated, or change the subject, or make light of the situation and say something funny?

Or, if there's a meeting to discuss possibilities of future downsizing during this economic downturn, do you email your boss or HR with all your ideas of how to handle employees during the process, or immediately cancel your family's vacation plans, or promise your key employees you'll keep them no matter what, or form a group and head off to management and blame them for their greedy ways that led to the downsizing, or meet with and tell your boss you'll back him/her no matter what and do what she s/he wants you to do?

Or, because of a previous commitment, your boss wants you to speak at a national meeting in two weeks because she's unavailable. What do you think? Ah, this will allow me to assume more power? Or, I'll feign illness and get out of it. Or, why do I always have to be the one to go? Or, I'm really busy so I'll get someone else to prepare the presentation.

Why is it that everyone doesn't act or react the same way? Simple. Family history and pattern development.

Each of the responses in the above situations reflects a pattern an action pattern and/or a thought pattern. And, as importantly, these reactions are not "one-off" patterns." They will arise again and again in similar situations.

Some examples (there are many) of learned pattern behaviors that show up in the way we react at work are:

The victim - the consummate complainer; pessimistic; feels disrespected, inadequate and fearful; quiet and withdrawn; avoids folks they view as highly competent; suppress feelings of incompetence; needs to be rescued; allies with other victims; avoids conflict; feels put upon; dislikes being managed; often gets sick; creates and re-creates unhappy settings;

The clown - extrovert; diverts attention with jokes and loud, witty, often sarcastic, offensive and embarrassing comments and one-liners; trivial experts; always adding their two cents; seen as bozos, jokers, smart-asses, motormouths;

The over-achiever - must excel at everything they do-to the point of obnoxiousness; must look picture-perfect; needs the "best" and "latest" of everything; chooses "success" over "happiness," needs special treatment; self-absorbed; resents criticism in any form; needs to be right and others to be wrong; generally untrustworthy;

The persecutor - bullies; needs to control, micromanage; exhibits verbal contempt for others; puts others down with offhand remarks or harsh criticism; views others as weak; admires other bullies; unfeeling; needs to feel important; needs to dominate and be the center of attention; needs to maintain a "most important person" status; sometimes a loudmouth; sometimes quiet and subtle; likes seeing others fail; withholds information;

The pleaser - can't deal with the truth; fearful of their own honest emotions; quiet; avoids conflict at all costs; rarely offer opinions; needs to fit in; self-conscious; afraid of disapproval; always apologizing and saying "I'm sorry," chameleon; talks a good game; plays it safe; results don't match words; likes being micromanaged; can't make decisions; passive aggressive; hidden anger;

For the vast majority of us, these patterns - our patterns - the ones we learned as children, are unconsciously and invisibly embedded in our cells, our brains and in our emotional bodies. These patterns represent who we are. They give us comfort and a sense of peace when faced with stressful, challenging and difficult times, events and circumstances and drive how we interact with others. They are self-fulfilling prophecies, and unless we have done the work to make the invisible, visible, we'll continue to react the same way over and over again in this job or another job, in this relationship or another relationship, in this or another similar circumstance, often wondering what pushed out buttons or why we reacted the way we did.

Only by working to make the unconscious, conscious, can we begin to see our self-limiting, self-destructive and self-sabotaging patterns and work to transform them into healthier and more productive ways of being so we can be with people, events and circumstances, which heretofore caused us stress, pain and suffering, and experience a firm sense of OK-ness and well-be-ing.

One way to do this exploratory work is to spend serious, reflective time looking at our past, our history growing up in our family our experiences which formed us and made us who we are. The expression, "I wasn't born yesterday" is very apt in this situation. The decisions we make today, our choices and our reactions to today's people, events and circumstances are not "in the moment," for the vast majority of us but are in fact "tape replays" of experiences we lived as children.

While today's events, characters and players are different from our childhood, our inner emotional, psychological, physiological and neurological wiring and reactions are not. Only when we consciously choose to explore and inquire into our past for the events, traumas, hurts, betrayals, emotions, and values that have determined who we are, and confront them head-on, with honesty and courage, can we become aware of the recurring themes and patterns which cause us and others with whom we relate, so much upset and unhappiness.

A few areas of exploration, and some initial questions that can assist your inquiry are:

Health - What was the health of your family like? How was sickness or illness viewed? What did your family believe about illness? How were sick family members cared for? Was illness denied? Did folks obsess about sickness or illness. Did sick people feel courageous or like "victims?" Did they persevere or give up? What about addictions?

Money - What role has money played in your family? Did folks misuse money? What was financial security like? Do you talk about money with you spouse or partner? Do you need financial support? Do you support others financially? What's your credit like?

Relationship - Was/is your family close or disengaged from one another? What is your relationship with your family of origin? What beliefs or messages did you hear about men and women as you were growing up? How did your family deal with guilt, fear, denial, and shame? Are there "family secrets" that are still affecting you and your family relationships?

Work - Was accomplishment rewarded and if so, how? How did folks gain attention and their "identity?" Who at work reminds you of your family either physically, emotionally, or in terms of their roles? Can you see your patterns of success or failure at work? What thoughts and messages did you hear about "work" as you were growing up? Do you view work as: fun, creative, or burdensome?

Spirituality - How did you develop a relationship with "the spiritual " i.e., a higher power, God, religion, spirituality? Was a religious practice or affiliation important as you were growing up? Does religion or spirituality affect your life: marriage, parenting, self-esteem, sexuality, and familial responsibilities or loyalties? Does your family observe rituals of celebration and connection (meals, rituals around coming and going, couple rituals)? Was anyone in your family particularly spiritual? How so? What positive or negative messages did you hear/receive about spiritual beliefs and practices?

(Other areas you might consider are: personal environment and organization, health and wellness, friends, personal development, play and recreation, and intimacy.)

So, it's no surprise that in our life at work, at home, at play and in relationship, we more often than not are acting out our childhood patterns and roles. It's not surprising that we unconsciously place overlays of our family members on to our colleagues, bosses and managers at work, on to our spouse or partner at home and on to our friends, neighbors and others at play. It's natural and normal, but often self-destructive and self-sabotaging both to us and to our relationships.

It's not uncommon, then, to witness workplace (or home or "playground") arguments that resemble family arguments, disagreement and conflict. It's not uncommon to experience dysfunctional relationships in the workplace with in-fighting and back-stabbing behavior that mimic sibling rivalries.

When we choose to undertake personal growth and self-awareness work, we then discover how we have come to behave in the ways we do, how we chose to play the roles and wear the masks to cover up our feelings of lack, inadequacy, or guilt or shame. In essence we discover the "shadow side" of our personalities. As Jungian analyst Robert Johnson says, "There's gold in the shadow" and that the discovery and mining of this gold is "related to our higher calling" our True, Real and Authentic Self - where we can shed the defensive roles and patterns of, for example, the "victim, "clown," "over-achiever, "persecutor," and "pleaser" to be replaced by the "True and Real" me.

When we discover who we truly are, we open to the possibility of emotional, psychological and spiritual maturity - the doorway to the place where the "truth sets one free." We can open to the possibility of being real, a state where we experience lightness of being and we have no need for defensiveness, grandiosity, avoidance, denial or fake and phony self-destructive and self-sabotaging role behavior.

Sometimes the journey backwards is well worth taking. This is one of those times.

So, some questions for self-reflection are:

·How do you deal with conflict at work, at home, and at play?
·Do folks at work remind you of your family of origin in any way? Do personality conflicts remind you of your parents or siblings?
·Do you ever play the role and exhibit patterns of the "victim," "clown," "over-achiever," persecutor," and "pleaser?" Or other roles?
·Do you generally take things personally? What would your friends and colleagues say?
·Did you ever look at your history to see why you are who you are? How do you feel when you think about this question?
·Do you know who your authentic self is? How do you know?

Injectable Fillers - The Downside

Restylane, Alloderm, collagen, fat, Sculptra... the choices in injectable facial fillers seem endless. What's more, new products become available all the time, each one promising to do more, last longer, and produce fewer side effects. And with average treatment costs in the several-hundred-dollar range, injectable fillers are increasingly popular with women from all walks of life, from soccer moms to fashion models. But, just how effective are fillers? Are the results worth it? And what potential problems do you need to watch out for?

Understanding the Beast

Fillers are substances injected under the skin to fill in lines, plump up skin, and remove wrinkles. Some fillers contain natural ingredients - including your own fat harvested from somewhere else on your body. Some fillers are made of synthetic ingredients. And others are a combination of natural substances derived from animals combined with synthetic ingredients.

Typically, fillers are injected in the doctor's office, as out-patient procedures that allow you to return to work and regular activities immediately after the appointment. The results are generally immediate, and the appointment usually takes less than an hour. There is often some slight discomfort or itching after the procedure, but that should clear up within a day or two. While some bruising may occur, side effects are rare and generally mild. So what's the catch?

Thanks Ma'am, We'll See You in Six Weeks

As with Botox (an injectable, but not a filler), one of the biggest downsides is that fillers are temporary. Sad to say, but the easier and safer the injectable, the more temporary it seems to be. You can even use your own fat as a filler, but the results will probably fade within weeks. There is no risk of allergic reaction with this procedure, because the filler is harvested from your own body, but chances are you'll be back at your doctor's in practically no time at all - although a small number of patients have reported terrific results that have lasted for up to a year.

Collagen is an older filler (which, for this hypochondriac, means that it may be "safer" and "better tested") that has a relatively short life span. In fact, some women arrange to have new injections every six weeks - and many report that it's their favorite. Restylane is perhaps the most popular filler around - and also reported to be the most painful.

Fillers containing hyaluronic acid usually last much longer; Juvederm is one such brand, and is touted to last up to one year, although there is talk that it doesn't live up to its claims. ArteFill is another "permanent" filler, while the makers of Radiesse and Sculptra claim semi-permanence. Of course, the longer-lasting the filler is, the more possibility there is for side effects or botched treatments that cannot be remedied. This may be an especially difficult problem in the case of Artefill, because it contains bovine collagen, an ingredient with a fairly high rate of allergic reactions.

Watch Out for This One!

Liquid silicone (Silikon 1000) has also been known to be used as an injectable filler despite the fact that it is not sold for this purpose. Because it is permanent, it has advantages. However, known complications with liquid silicone include migration and lumpiness that can develop years after treatment. There have even been reports of silicone finding its way into blood vessels and forming a clot! It's so risky, in fact, it's been likened to injecting a time bomb - or, the Russian roulette of cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery.

So since Silikon 1000 is approved for use in one part of the body, certain loopholes in FDA regulations allow docs to use it off-label as an injectable filler. But because of the dangers associated with silicone injections into the face and lips, the FDA has banned doctors from advertising it. What's more, there have been so many lawsuits related to this use of silicone that many plastic surgery medical malpractice insurance contracts now carry a clause that prohibits doctors from using it and refuse liability coverage for complications resulting from silicone injections.

Risks Include...

One widely recognized problem is that the longer-lasting fillers can also cause lumps to form under your skin at the site of the injection. Sometimes the lumps are visible. And, even when they're not, they can be felt. Who wants to be kissed by lumpy lips? Artecol and Dermalive are two brand names that have been frequently associated with this problem. And yet, to be fair, it can happen with any of them.

The official statement from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is that the risks involved include: allergies, infection, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness. They neglect to mention the horrible side effect mentioned by one medical study -- necrosis. That's dead tissue. Call me squeamish, but the thought of my lips turning into dead flesh is pretty scary. I realize that every medical procedure contains inherent risks. But I wonder: is the potential gain worth the risks that come along with injectable fillers?

Woman Overboard-Your Greatest Enemy May be You

Take it from a woman who over-plucked her eyebrows when she was fifteen-and they never grew back: making changes to your appearance can be intoxicating. I was so entranced by how large my eyes looked that I kept on going. The same thing can happen with facial fillers. Too much of a good thing is - too much. No one wants plastic fish lips - but it's easy to see how a little filler can turn into more next time, and then a longer-lasting one, and one more time, and suddenly you've gone too far.

One way to ease into the world of fillers is to ask your doctor to try a temporary injectable like collagen the first few times. This will give you an idea of what a longer-lasting product like Juvederm will do for you. And that way, you can live with a filler for awhile before you commit to the new look. This brings me to a final issue related to injectable fillers. Is it just me, or are we in the midst of a trend toward unnaturally shaped, very large lips? I've reviewed about six dozen plastic surgeons' before and after photos of "lip enhancements" on the Internet, and I have to say: at least half of them looked quite unnatural and unattractive to me. So bad, in fact, that the "before" photos often looked better.

What's up with this? I haven't notice plastic surgeons posting photos of nose jobs that look worse than what the patient had to begin with. Or breast implants gone wrong. Why all these oddly shaped lips and over-plumped creases? While the information highway appears to be in full bloom, the web, in many ways, has made it all the more difficult to find a qualified practitioner. My advice: stay away from strip malls and nail salons that offer injectable treatments, and read our Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Surgeon.

Striving for Perfection

Perfection is the name of the game in plastic surgery. Doctors are trying to provide us with the perfect facial fillers, and the rest of us are crossing our fingers and hoping for that perfect, smooth, wrinkle-free skin. It looks to me like these do not yet live up to the hype. But with new products coming out every day, the perfect filler might be just around the corner.

April Birthday Invitations and Ideas For a Great Spring Party

April can be the perfect time to host a birthday party. While the weather can be a little too unpredictable to host an all-outdoor party, there are many great indoor activities to keep your party guests entertained. Or if you do make a plan for some outdoor activities, have some indoor games planned too, just in case you get the worst of the weather. Think about incorporating spring themes, colors and décor accents and you'll have a great April bash in no time.

Invitations
Big and bright patterns are perfect for an April birthday invitation. A little girls' birthday invitation would look perfect in shades of pink, purple or yellow. And a little boy's birthday invitation looks great in hues of blue and green. Spring sports are starting around this time in school so you might want to center your invitations and activities on your birthday kid's favorite sport.

For grown up parties, April is perfect for 'April Fool's Day' themes with jokes and pranks galore. April is also tax time. Your guests might get a kick out of an invitation that looks like a tax form or a note from the IRS. After tax day (April 15) everyone needs a reason to celebrate, so your April birthday is right on time.

Games
April birthdays are about more than just cake and presents. You should have some great games and activities in mind. Once you've got your games and activates in mind, use that theme to add some style to your birthday invitations. Try to make your games indoor/outdoor friendly as you just can't tell about the weather. Send your birthday invitation and invite guests to an April scavenger hunt. Just like an Easter egg hunt, have your guests hunt for hidden items - perfect in the yard or in the house.

Outdoor sports and games like kickball, baseball or soccer are great fun, but if your game is called on account of weather, have a backup plan. An interactive video game might be a nice treat if you're stuck inside.

Locations
You might not be crazy about having your birthday guests traipsing in and out of your house. In this instance you might want to host your party at an alternate location. April is a great time for a birthday party at a local recreation center with indoor and outdoor spaces. You might also try a kid-focused restaurant with games and activities for your young party-goers. Or try a movie theater. Some cinemas offer space for your party and then a package deal on a movie for your whole group. Any of these locations can offer you a great opportunity to send a fun themed birthday invitation. You might be tempted to try an outdoor space, but remember its not quite summer yet - hold off until May or June just to be safe.

April is a great time for a fun spring party. Lots of spring themes and colors can lend style to your décor and birthday invitations. Keep in mind that Easter and Passover are both in April, so don't make any plans to interfere with that and you'll all set.

Risk and HR Managers Must Work Together

With health care costs rising, companies routinely question how they can continue to provide health benefits to their employees without cutting into their bottom line.

Traditionally, these decisions are primarily made in the Human Resources department, which not only chooses what benefits to offer, but also must communicate those benefits - and changes in them - to employees.

These decisions, however, should not be made in a vacuum. Health benefits decisions made in one department can effect other areas of the company, and ultimately impact the company's bottom line in ways that may not have been foreseen.

One example is the relationship between Human Resources and the person at the company responsible for risk management. That could be a risk manager per se, the chief financial officer, treasurer, or vice president of administration - whoever is responsible for managing risk. Changes that happen with employee health benefits by human resources ultimately can impact costs trying to be controlled by the risk manager. Both positions can help the company if HR and risk managers understand how changes to employee health benefits could impact risks to the company. It's important to find a balance so everyone - employees and employer - come out ahead.

Here are some ways the HR department and the risk manager can work together to benefit employees and the company.

1. Consider the possible negative impact before cutting medical benefits: If medical benefits are cut and employees know they must pay more for doctor visits, they may be more likely to declare an illness or injury as a workers compensation claim. They might attribute the nagging back pain to an injury or overuse at work, rather than the weekend soccer game.

Since there is no co-pay or deductible for workers comp claims, it costs the employee nothing, but could end up costing the company much more than a traditional medical claim. Workers comp claims can also result in paid time off work or lost time, adding further to company costs as well as reduced productivity while the employee is away from the job.

Regardless of whether a claim is under the group medical or workers comp, HR and the risk manager can work together to reduce the amount of the claim through medical management and early return-to-work programs. Return-to-work programs offer the employee light or modified duty so the employee stays productive in the company. Such programs are quite common for workers comp, but not for short-term disability claims. With HR and risk management working together in a total disability management approach, effective cost containment measures such as this can be shared for the benefit of all.

Benefits communication to employees is another area of opportunity. This is more commonly done in HR, but rarely done for workers comp. The person in charge of risk management would be well-advised to work with HR to put together a communication package about workers comp so employees will better understand how it works, why it's a benefit to them, and what it costs the company. Since HR is accustomed to communicating with employees about employee benefits, it would be a good communication avenue to discuss workers comp issues as well.

2. Medical management: This is where a company partners with a local doctor or clinic to provide medical treatment for employees. These doctors are invited to tour the workplace so they can see the work environment and learn about the work employees do, including physical requirements of the various jobs. Employees are then encouraged to use these doctors for treatment. Because these doctors understand the nature of the work, they are better able to treat these employees for specific work-related problems and will also help release them for modified or light duty work. This benefits both the employee and the employer and works best with a trusting employee population. Companies need to make sure they have the employees' best interests in mind and are not just out to reduce medical costs without regard to the quality of the services. It's important that the health care provided be as good or better at the same or lower cost.

3. Encouraging better health: Part of a risk manager's job is to cut reduce the number and cost of medical claims from on-the-job injuries. One proven way to do this is to have a healthier workforce. Risk managers should join HR departments to offer programs that encourage employees to get and stay healthy. This includes fitness programs, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation plans, and health screenings. Such programs are often overlooked or not implemented because the relationship between them and reduced claims is difficult to prove. However, these programs ultimately can reduce medical claims and costs as well as increase employee productivity and job satisfaction, and reduce turnover.

Companies also should consider offering the new Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which allow employees to manage some of their own health care dollars and derive additional benefits from being informed consumers. With these newly approved accounts, an employee chooses a higher deductible for health care, which allows the company and the employee to make deposits in an HSA in an amount equal to the deductible. Unspent account balances grow tax-free and eventually may be used for non-medical purposes. Since it's their money, employees might take more responsibility for how they spend it and hopefully, choose a healthier lifestyle if it reduces their out-of-pocket health care costs.

4. Combine health and safety: Risk managers are concerned about employee safety, while HR managers focus on employee health. Combining these goals can help employees achieve both at the same time. We worked previously with a utility in Montana that had a safety program to keep workers safe in the field. We implemented a health program along with the safety program that encouraged employees to participate in a fitness program. This included blood pressure and cholesterol screenings so employees would become healthier overall. The result: the safety record improved because healthier employees had fewer on-the-job injuries.

Health care decisions are made by consumers. The more informed these consumers are, the better decisions they will make. The challenge and opportunity is for HR and risk management to work together to educate employees so they can make the better decisions for their own wellbeing as well as for the benefit of the company they work for.

Good Voice Training Is the Best Preventative for Vocal Abuse

What many people may not understand about vocal abuse is that changing only one aspect of your vocal delivery will stop vocal abuse in its tracks. Done. Over. Finished. It is truly amazing when you realize that, aside from abuse which may be caused by certain prescriptive medications, chronic hoarseness, persistent sore throats and even loss of voice can be eliminated simply by changing where you place your voice.

As the majority of the population is not aware of correct voice placement, the rise of vocal abuse is stunning. We are using our voices today, now more than ever. We attend live sporting events - whether it is professional sports or the weekly soccer games for our 6-year-olds - and the result is that we are doing damage to the throat and vocal folds.

Among our teachers, the increase in this abuse is staggering because they are dealing with children and young people who are much more unruly than they were 30, 40 or 50 years ago. Thus they resort to yelling or shouting. And, it is also telling on the voices of coaches, politicians, ministers, and professional trainers and speakers.

One of my clients, a Canadian minister, just had surgery to remove a tumor which was sitting next to his vocal folds. When I first spoke with this man, a few weeks before the surgery, the gravel in his voice was a sure sign that he had been misusing his voice for many, many years. He was told by his ear, nose & throat specialist, that once he had recovered from the surgery, he would need to learn to place his voice properly. This is good news since many ENTs are not giving that advice to their throat patients because they honestly do not know about the practice of good voice placement.

What I am talking about is using your chest to power your speaking voice. Aside from the fact that you will discover a richer, warmer, resonant sound, the result will be an end to vocal abuse because you will be taking the pressure off the throat and vocal folds. In the past, you have been relying primarily on those 2 resonators - as well as the mouth and nasal cavities - for powering and amplifying your voice. Once your chest is involved in the process, however, you will notice an immediate relief because the real power of your voice lies in that huge chest cavity, not your other 4 resonators.

If you are suffering from vocal abuse, make the change. It is pretty tough to go through life with chronic hoarseness or no voice at all!

Stop Listening To Bad Advice On Building Relationships For Money

Internet marketing advice is like a roundabout where someone starts to promote a certain aspect of it and others get on the bandwagon and regurgitate what was said before them.

Along the way the information gets distorted and before long there are people who haven't a clue what they are talking about giving advice to others that is wrong.

Some people obviously thought that the old 'money is in the list' advice needed a rev up and started focusing on the fact that the money is in the relationship.
This is sound advice because without a good relationship with the people on your list they will never trust your advice and they will never act on your recommendations HOWEVER there are many different types of relationships and contrary to what some people are saying, you can actually build a relationship with people simply by selling to them ALL the time.

Yes - you can build relationships if your list is specifically comprised of people who want to buy stuff and they want to get it for a bargain or get a bonus when they buy from you.

To say that you can never have a list where you just sell stuff all the time is just nonsense and it comes from people who haven't had the experience with that type of list.

I don't go to the supermarket to chat to the shopkeeper about their son's soccer games. I go there to buy stuff.

If you have a list of buyers you have to be careful that you just give them what they want and to tell them a whole lot of stuff that they don't want to read will be reason for them to unsubscribe.

There are many different relationships. You need to know which one is appropriate and keep within the boundaries where possible.

If in doubt, create more lists and ask your subscribers if they are interested in that list as well.

Reaching For The Fit Kid Within

Remember when you were little and you "exercised" because it was fun? You never thought about how many calories you were burning in ballet class or how high you were getting your heart rate in the heat of a soccer game. That was never the point.

Now that you're out of grade school, exercise means something different. It's that thing you squeeze in after work or before dinner, feel guilty about skipping and therefore adding even more stress to your life. Somehow, the elliptical trainer or the treadmill doesn't inspire the anticipation and joy that the swimming pool once did.

So how do you reconnect with that long-lost sense of play? Going back to the activities you love. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't do the things you enjoyed as a kid. After all, studies show that if you love the physical activity you're doing, you're likely to do it more often and for a longer period of time than if you don't. That's why I recommend getting in touch with your younger, fitter self as a way to recharge and reenergize yourself; I call it "Reaching for the Fit Kid Within". I ask people what they enjoyed during their childhood, early teen years and high school. Then I ask them if they would consider doing that again.

Starting with a 5 minutes meditation that would facilitate the connection between mind, body and soul, allowing yourself to reach within and accept the playful kid that you are.

Follow with 30 minutes high energy, fun drills and exercises that you use to enjoy when you were a kid. You can even involve your kids; they'll guide you, allow to be yourself, and allow them be the kids they are. I personally play soccer or simply chase my kids around the backyard. There is no limit to what we can actually do.

Finishing with a 5 minutes stretching program and cooling down with a 5 minutes relaxation techniques to come back to our adult world.

Selecting the Right Baby Nursery Decor

The baby is almost ready to arrive and you are quickly trying to pull together a nursery that is perfect for your new little angel. But what baby nursery decor should you go with? This is a question that many people find themselves facing and in most cases, they simply do not know what to do other then do what they think everyone else does.

The thing is though; you can really be creative with the nursery. The room should burst at its seams with the creativeness and love that was over flowing from the parents. With all of the nursery decoration styles, themes and artistic visions out there, there is no reason to be stuck with the same old blue bears or pink bears.  The idea is to create a room like none other.  You can of course draw from different designs and styles of baby nursery decor that you have seen in the past. This does not mean however that you should copy anything.

Take something from one theme and maybe add in something from another theme. You can create your own vision and do something that has never been seen before. The options are really endless and it is up to you to make sure that the room is everything that you want it to be.  Of course, there is still always room for the families that take pride in tradition.

Maybe you are someone who pictures animals every time you think of a nursery. If this is the case for you then by all means, go for it. But still do not be afraid to add little touches such as special pictures of mommy and daddy at the zoo or things of that nature. By adding in those little touches you will be able to create a personalized nursery space using the traditional ideas that you have grown to love.

Need some ideas of some traditional nursery decoration styles, themes, and visions? Many people will first figure out if they are decorating for a boy or a girl. If you will be decorating for a boy then you can go with white, blue, or even green walls. You can splatter sports decorations and themed furniture and pictures all over the room. Whether it is soccer, football, or baseball, you will be able to create a space that is perfectly suited for the little boy of yours that is on the way.  Another idea for a baby nursery decor is that of animals such as lizards, bears, and tigers. Although not everyone likes the idea of animals looking fierce, some people find it to be an attractive option for the nursery of a boy.

If you want to take a softer approach to the animal theme, you can decorate the room to look like a jungle with lots of green and little animals poking out here and there. Allow your imagination to run wild and you will be amazed at what you can come up with.  For little girls, many people find that the soft flowers or cartoon characters are a great choice for the baby nursery decor. While there is no disputing that, you want to make sure that you are truly looking through all of your options and thinking into the future before making any drastic decisions. Many people find that the baby nursery decor that they selected was fine at first but once the child grew to be two or three years old, the décor was no longer appropriate.

For someone who does not mind remodeling, or that can afford it, this will not be such an issue. For the rest of the people out there, major design remodeling is not something that they want to do or can afford to do every couple of years. Because of this you may want to stick with a baby nursery decor that the baby can grow with for several years and still get plenty of enjoyment out of it.  Whether you are sticking with bold colors that can adapt into many different designs throughout the years or selecting something completely gender neutral, you want to make sure that you and the child will be happy with it for a long time to come.

3 Things About Backpack Blowers You Need to Know

For a long time now, both the professional landscapers and serious gardeners have been using backpack blowers to help them in maintaining their grounds and landscapes. Keeping the flower gardens, lawns and ornamental trees well groomed and beautiful leaving hobbyists and home gardeners, to enjoy and wonder how do, they do that. There are two basic types of blowers commonly used by these serious minded individuals; they are the electric-powered models for delicate work or the gas-powered models for the bigger projects. Electric blowers are convenient for use in and around tight spaces, and require less effort, making them easier to handle. The gas-powered blowers, on the other hand, are quite a bit more powerful, making them the best choice for larger jobs, which requires a bit more strength to use. As you continue reading this article, you will discover what the pros know about blowers, and why they use the models they do.

Where do Leaf Blowers get their Power

1. How power is made To better understand where power comes from; think about it this way, air is forced through the nozzle on the end of a blower's discharge tube. This nozzle is smaller than the rest of the discharge tube. For example, let us just say, the size of a drinking straw. This will increase the air speed coming out of the nozzle; it could reach speeds as much as 300 miles per hour (mph). This kind of speed would be good for blowing debris out of cracks in a sidewalk or concrete driveway. That much air speed creates a great deal of pressure in a relatively small area, but it would not have enough power to blow the leaves in your yard very well. The drinking straw sized opening would increase the air pressure (measured in miles per hour); but, it would cause a huge loss of air volume. The cleaning jobs we want to use a blower for require both air pressure measured in miles per hour, (mph) and air volume measured in cubic feet per minute, (cfm).

2. CFM alone is not a good measure of how powerful a blower is. Simply increasing the size of a blower's discharge tube nozzle will increase cfm. For instance, the size of a soccer ball, subsequently the blower could, conceivably put out 600 cfm. Set up this way, it might work well for sweeping dust or other lightweight debris off a driveway or sidewalk, but without adequate air pressure, the blower would have a hard time blowing anything other than dust, leaves, and bits of paper or other lightweight debris. It would be more like a gentle summer breeze, and simply would not have the power to do anything more.

3. Blowers need both, mph and cfm working together to produce power. Mph provides the necessary pressure required to get dirt and debris moving, loosening matted leaves from your yard, bits of paper from your driveway and dust, dirt and leaves from your garage and patio. Optimum levels of cfm provide air volume required to keep the debris moving with the stream of air. The more power a blower has the faster and more efficiently you will finish your clean-up chores, saving you valuable time that you want to spend doing all the other important stuff.

Why Use a Backpack Blower

Large commercial duty gas powered blowers produce up to 700 cfm and 200 mph, making them extremely powerful, where they perform cleaning chores like blowing leaves, cleaning parking lots and stadium seating. However, mounting the powerful blowers on a backpack frame and distributing the weight evenly across the operator's shoulders and back makes the additional weight of the larger gas-powered engine and increased power much easier to handle. Coupled with an ergonomically designed handle assembly, including a variable speed throttle control, attached to the blower discharge tube work to make backpack blowers handle as if they were an extension of your right arm.

Smaller homeowner models are available in either two stroke or four stroke engine configurations. For the folks who would rather avoid mixing gas and oil, there are the blowers that use a four-stroke engine, which runs on regular unleaded gas. Still yet, there are the two stroke engine models for those of us that already have trimmers, chainsaws and mini cultivators, who are already accustomed to mixing the two-cycle fuel. With lightweight models starting at around nineteen pounds, and one-hundred and fifty mph they are much easier to operate for an afternoon's worth of work than a similarly performing hand-held blower is.

An American Soccer Fan's Musings On Mexico

As a sporting rivalry, the United States vs. Mexico soccer rivalry is highly unusual in a number of ways. There is an enormous asymmetry in terms of the histories, pedigrees and breadth of fan devotion, and in many ways the rivalry feeds off of the deeply ambivalent nature of the larger geopolitical environment in which the matchup takes place.

This causes fans to lose a sense of objectivity about the strengths of the respective squads, and many debates in online forums rapidly degenerate into silly jingoistic tirades. Can, then, an American soccer fan offer an honest assessment of the strengths of the two sides? I shall try.

Mexico is better. Ugh... just saying is a disgusting thing for an American soccer fan. Mexico is better. As odious as the sentence feels to say and sounds to hear, it is as true as it is disappointing. Now, I know all the head-to-head statistics that show how dominant the Untied States has been away from Azteca, and by any reasonable examination of the situation, even the most diehard fan of the Tricolores would have to admit that Mexico can't beat the United States. Odd as it sounds, though, it doesn't actually mean that the United States is better.

In boxing, trainers and journalists talk about styles making fights, and this is certainly true of soccer as well. For reasons either stylistic or psychological, the United States has Mexico's number. That said, it is also certainly true that Mexico has fared better against top international competition than has the United States.

To get at the root of my point, imagine a thought experiment. Suppose that you took the top seven teams in the world; for the sake of argument, let us say that they are Italy, Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, Portugal, and Germany. Suppose further that you could select either the United States or Mexico to play in this round-robin tournament. Which team would do better? Even as an American fan, I think it is obvious that Mexico would likely do better. They have played Brazil and Argentina extremely well of late, even managing to pull out some high profile wins. In any case, none of those teams would outclass Mexico in the way that, say, the Czech Republic did to the United States in 2006.

It is completely understandable to want to tear down your rival, and to dismiss them out of hand as being of less quality. Doing so, though, both diminishes the victories that you earn against them and also precludes you from trying to learn something from them. Irrespective of the dominance that Team USA has had against Mexico of late, who would argue against the notion that the USA could learn something from the way in which Mexico insists on playing with style, attack mindedness and flow. Similarly, for what's worth, Mexico could also learn a great deal from the United States about how to play with grit and determination when confronted with a more talented opponent.

So, the United States and Mexico will gear up to play again, and both sides will likely both overstate the importance of the match while, oddly, also understating the quality of their opponent. This is an unfortunate mistake because both sides have some quality players, a bright future, and real reasons to respect each other, even if they don't always like each other.

Chelsea's Poor Form Now Looks Like A Crisis

Chelsea's poor run of form in the Premier League continues and now the club appears to be in crisis. In their worst run of form since 1998, they have now failed to win any of their last six league games and have dropped a total of 18 points in their last eight league games.

At the beginning of November Chelsea were at the top of the Premier League, and five points clear of their nearest rival. The Blues are now six points behind leaders Manchester United and are currently in 5th place and they now face a tough midweek fixture against a resilient Bolton side who are currently one place below them, if they lose, Chelsea will slip to 6th place in the Premier League table.

Chelsea's indifferent form was again cruelly exposed as they were easily beaten 3-1 by an Arsenal team, who they had beaten in all of their five previous meetings. Gone are the free scoring team that we saw at the beginning of the season, the stylish play and confidence of champions now seems to be a distant memory.

Chelsea looked disorganised and again lacked invention and at times motivation. The once organised defence seems to be leaking goals. After conceding two goals in the space of two minutes in the fixture against Arsenal, Chelsea seemed void of any plan and incapable of a fight back.

More questions will now be asked about the future of the Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti, who only last season led Chelsea to their first League and FA Cup winning double in their 105 year history. The downturn in fortunes for the Stamford Bridge club appear to have coincided with the departure of assistant coach Ray Wilkins, who left suddenly at the beginning of November.

Chelsea now have important home fixtures against Bolton and Aston Villa, which could determine the rest of their season and certainly the future of Carlo Ancelotti.

5 Different Affiliate Selling Techniques

Running A Voucher Code Website
If you want to promote a wide range of merchants and are happy to spend a little time each day dropping by onto money saving forums to promote your website, then running your own voucher code website is a possibility.

They are easy to set up, have a wide range of uses and can be very enjoyable once they are receiving traffic. The traffic is not found through paid or SEO schemes and the tricks are suitable for anyone.

Pay Per Click
You can use Pay Per Click either by directly sending traffic to the merchant's website or by sending traffic to your own website first, which gives other advertising potential.

For this, you just go through your favourite search engines and buy Pay Per Click adverts on suitable keyword terms. Go for the longer keyword terms at first - those that whilst they do have less traffic are harder to think up and are cheaper to buy.

The advantage of this method is that it is quick and easy to set up. But the problem is the investment that you need to make in time to research keywords and money to buy the adverts. But, once it is running you are just keeping your eye on the adverts to make sure they are in profit. So long term, there is little to do.

Blogging
You can use blogging to promote an affiliate product. Quite simply start blogging about a range of products or items and add in affiliate links as and when appropriate. You may, for example, run a football blog that talks about the latest soccer news and on occasion drops in a suitable affiliate opportunity.

This is near enough free to set up, but takes a lot of time and effort to run. It works through getting your blog noticed by regular readers and then occasionally hitting them with a sales opportunity.

Search Engine Optimisation
Similar to blogging, you create a website, or a blog, about a theme and then start heavily optimising the website so that people interested in buying the products you are promoting find your website before making their purchase.

The website works best if it adds some sort of value to the sale. Maybe a review website or price comparison website.

Article Writing
You can write articles relating to the products that you want to promote and submit them to high traffic article directories. The links can either go to the affiliate website, or better still to your own page that then allows the visitor to click a link.

This is easy to set up, it just requires a lot of writing and if your writing skills are not up to much then people might not be interested in your writing and might not follow the links you are leaving in your articles.

Most Popular Soccer Players - Ronaldo, Beckham, Mia Hamm, Brandy Chastain

If you type those words into your search engine, the answer you will get right now is probably going to be: Cristiano Ronaldo. With looks that rivals super star, David Beckham and the talent to boot, Ronaldo is a superstar soccer standout that actually can play the game. Like most little boys, he started playing when he was young, around age eight but really started to be noticed two years later. Now, at the relatively advanced age of twenty-two, Ronaldo has racked up 53 goals in over 200 matches. Impressive numbers at any age.

And what about Beckham? His move from the UK to Los Angeles was supposed to spark US interest in the sport of soccer. He is one good looking man, but his injuries may well keep him from really making the sport as popular here as it is worldwide. His professional career began at sixteen when he started played for the Manchester United team. He was asked to join Britain's World Cup Team in 1997. Even when he is not playing soccer, Beckham is a popular figure, his endorsement deals and stunning good looks make him very, very well known.

For me, the word "soccer" will always make me think of Mia Hamm. Her stats are impressive and not just when compared to women- her stats are phenomenal across the board. Mia started playing at age 12 and just three years later played with the US National Team- making her the youngest to ever play for her country at that level. She is one of only two women listed on soccer great Pele's list of " The 125 Best Soccer Players of All Times" and has won the FIFA Player of the Year Award twice. ( In 2001 and 2002). Hamm scored 158 goals in 275 matches in her career and played in the Women's World Cup twice (1991 and 1999). She was also a member of the gold medal Olympic team in 1996. On a personal level, Mia Hamm has always been described as the quiet, and unassuming member of the team. She is an excellent role model, especially for young women who are bombarded with images of scantily clad, morally bankrupt pop stars.

Of course, if we are going to talk about Mia Hamm, we have to talk about Brandy Chastain as well. Even people who could not tell a soccer ball from a bocce ball knows who Brandy is. After a thrilling victory, a triumphant Ms. Chastain whipped off her top, revealing her sport bra and sparking a veritable media frenzy. Over 90,000 people were in attendance for that event, not to mention the people watching at home and the countless replays. It has been on a variety of sports related count downs, including "Best Sports Moment Ever" to name just one. Not only did she spark interest in soccer for young girls, but the sale of sports bras jumped dramatically.

Every sport has their popular stars. They are not always the flashy players, or the best looking. Sometimes they are the players that bring something extra to the sport and to the world around them. A little touch of class, or a generous soul. Those are the players that win hearts and then keep them forever.

Wayne Rooney Rules

When Wayne Rooney had a real go against the Milan defence earlier this season, Silvio Berlusconi was so baffled he switched off his tv set in anger. Putting the ball into the net in nearly every single game, Rooney is only a few goals behind the amount the Portugese international managed two seasons ago. Nevertheless, Rooney has on several occasions upheld that assisting Manchester United to a successful crusade is more important than emulating Ronaldo's goal run.

Apparently, Wayne Rooney has made a dedication to deliver goals at a rate most of his equals cannot aspire to emulate. A powerful and potent player, his ability to score goals is incomparable on the international soccer scene at the very moment. Wayne Rooney has been in overwhelming form recently taking his goal tally to 32 and he has even been tipped to break the 40 goal mark as he closes on the 42 goal record achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2008.

Reportedly, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has been rather amazed by Rooney as he is about to blast Manchester United to a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Both at home and abroad, Wayne Rooney has demonstrated why Real Madrid are determined to link him to former team mate Cristiano Ronaldo. Still, it's hard to believe that Real Madrid consider Manchester United a feeder club as anyone launching such an thought must be regarded as a staring imbecile. Besides, the inform striker looks to be kind of moderate to the prospect of joining Ronaldo. Hopefully, Wayne Rooney will settle to follow the examples of long serving Old Trafford players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

Regarded as one of the hottest players in the world, Wayne Rooney has been firmly in the public eye since bursting into the England side at the age of 17. Manchester United signed him for approximately £30 million shortly after the 2004 European Championships and he has since helped the club to three consecutive league titles. During his stay at Old Trafford, Rooney has no question demonstrated that he can score against quality opposition and his talents are evident to anyone who has watched him play.

Wayne Rooney can match any player in the top flight for tempo as well as possessing an unbelievable ball keeping capability beyond the rational imagery of most players. With scarcely two years remaining on his present deal, he is most likely to sign a new contract with United in the near future. Only to reinforce the view that scoring goals is utterly essential in association football, we should remember that any campaign will become a failure without a reliable marksman.

The outstanding Mancunian writer Anthony Burgess once said that life is a wretched gray Saturday, but it has to be lived through. With this in mind, it 's most stimulating to notice that Wayne Rooney still tries to add a bit of colour to life every now and then.

Here are some important aspects of coaching that can help you to boost your team's performance and also improve your coaching skills. These are just some basic guidelines and they work in general for most teams.

The important aspect that you should focus on as a coach is to strive to improve the team's fitness, ball skills, and tactics. Fitness is a very vital element for your team because in order to win a game, the players need to be fit to play the entire game. You should have exercise and practice regiments to build up their stamina and endurance.

The next area you need to focus on is your team's ball skills. You need to be able to train your team's skill in various styles of play so that the players will improve their skill and their thinking as they play. Skill in ball handling is very crucial in the game. The other aspect you should consider very greatly in your coaching is your team tactics. Most typical and effective way is to do formations built on the talents and skills of the players. If you know their abilities you can put these into their best use through certain tactics and formations.

In order to do all this things it requires some basic ideas on how you should handle and deal with your team and the kind of relationship you should develop with them. You need to know your players so that you know what kind of training you should give them. Consider their age as well, as young players have different attitudes and mindsets on the game as they are very focused on the ball than older players with whom you can introduce may tactics-related skills.

Israel Can't Win A War While Abetting The Enemy

"What's in the boxes?" I asked.

"Ping pong tables."

Oh... I thought. A Red Cross truck is bringing us supplies. How nice.

"And, what's in those?" I asked again.

"Sneakers," the Red Cross guy said. "Those packages are sweatpants. Those crates have TVs."

It was 1992-I was fresh in my new job working in the Israeli Prison Service (IPS). And, boy was I in for a surprise.

I watched them carry truckloads of these goods past my wide-eyed envious inmates.

Then, I wondered out loud, "Where they takin' all that stuff?"

"To the political prisoners," a guard said.

'Political prisoners' is Israeli parlance. In the US, they're called terrorists.

Similar to many Jews like me, born and educated in America, I rationalized: "Giving ping pong tables to these guys!? Well, I guess the Israelis must know what they're doing."

My jail, Nitzan Maximum Security Prison in Ramla holds 700 men. Two hundred of these are the world's most dangerous terrorists, leaders of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah.

Guys you wouldn't let your sister go to the prom with.

Like Izz al-Din Shuell al-Masri who meandered into a Jerusalem pizza shop, overflowing with teenagers, mothers and infants, and detonated an explosive he was concealing in his guitar case. Nails, nuts, bolts and shrapnel ripped through the air and killed fifteen people, including seven children. An entire family, parents and three children, were wiped out. Judy Greenbaum, 31, from Passaic, N.J. died, as did other Americans. One hundred and thirty others were also wounded, some lost eyes, arms and legs.

Izz al-Din Shuell al-Masri, 22 at the time, was a soldier in Hamas, and states happily in interviews, "Even though I'm sentenced to sixteen life-sentences, I know that I will eventually be freed from prison and we'll be freed from Israeli occupation."

Back to ping-pong tables.

So, for over a decade and a half in my mind, I compared how the IPS treats Israeli inmates (7.5 on a one-to-ten-scale) and its terrorists.

My advice to you: If you ever find yourself facing an unfortunate and unavoidable incarceration-tell them your name is Abdul.

Here's the facts from my first-hand experience.

The terrorists had a new TV in every cell. And they had a private pantry in every cell block storing food items complimentary to their ethnic palates -e.g. lentils, Turkish coffee, young beef. These goodies were there to keep them happy, and they supplemented the Service-issued diet.

They had daily exercise and yard time and I personally watched them practicing martial arts (mediocre), calisthenics (poor), running, and soccer (amateurish).

They got special Friday afternoon yard-time for their religious sermon and minyan. They'd spread out their prayer rugs, and get lined up - no AWOLs tolerated - in razor-straight rows of strict military-discipline.

They had regular extended family visits, which was always a security nightmare, the same screening nightmare posed by regular attorney visits, free legal defense, free education, medical and dental treatment.

Conditions sound good? Yes, and whoever authorized them might have thought they were beneficial for Israel's security.

That assumption is dead wrong.

Conditions like the above is like pouring kerosene on a burning fire, for the following reasons:

First, terrorists behind bars are glorified martyrs in their communities. Media-covered incarceration simply elevates them into becoming viewed as more powerful leaders in their movements - even while behind bars.

Second, try as the Arabic-speaking IPS officer did to monitor the weekly sermons, they remain hot podiums for brain-washing propaganda. It was a regular ritual: seventy congregants form a perfectly round circle in the exercise yard, listening to one of their own leaders preach. He's ranting. All the terrorist inmates know that every word is being overheard and screened against incitement for violence. Yet, week after week, the same frenzied vile is spewed: "And, with Allahs' help we will overcome our enemies and drive them from our land."

The IPS won't stop them. It would look unacceptably bad in the media.

The continuous torrent of defense attorneys, family and friends is well-known to be an unstoppable supply route for contraband - in both directions.

From the outside, cell-phones were smuggled in almost daily. These are used to coordinate operative directives to their terrorist organizations.

From the inside, three by four inch scraps of paper containing microscopic handwriting with military directives is transmitted to the war front.

The education, partly supported through our tax-shekels, partly from Arab funds - which also comes from millions of US tax dollars - is not only a budgetary scandal. It's worse.

Put succinctly: They did enough damage as uneducated terrorists, what will they do as educated ones?

One day, guarding the exercise yard, I asked a twenty-something Hamas guy how he felt about prison and about his three life sentences.

He thought a second, then responded, "We have good lives inside the prisons. Our families are also taken care of outside because we're here."

He laughed and added, "It's only a matter of time before we're freed through a prisoner-exchange or peace-deal. We all know that in the end Islam is going to win over Israel, and the war with the West."

I don't know about that, I thought. In the meantime, you and your cronies are behind bars, where you belong.

This week, a Knesset panel discussed a bill to end "5-Star Hotel Conditions For Terrorists."

I still believe the Israelis know what they're doing. I've lived here long enough to see we've got some of the best minds in the world working to keep the economy strong and society flourishing Yes, with all the problems, we do have some of the greatest thinkers at work, even in politics, trying to keep this place safe. People who read, absorb and decide based on listening to other's thoughts.

For my part, then, I just hope they're listening to this: You can't win a war while abetting the enemy.

Starting a Business With a New Baby

If you have recently had a baby, you may think that this means that you may have to put your dreams of running business on hold. I started my business with my middle son was 4 months old and currently have a 5 month old five and a half years later. With some careful planning and preparation, you can make your dreams of owning a successful business become a reality.

If you have a determined to start your own business, there are some important things you need to know before you begin. The following tips will help you to succeed in business.

1. An important factor when you have a baby and want to start a business is making sure that you have informed your family of what you would like to do. The reason why this is important is because family support will be very important. You will need to discuss the income considerations, hours of operations, start-up costs, etc. Since you recently gave birth, this is also subtracting from your monthly budget. It is also important that your hours of operation and office space be respected whether the space is a room or a closet. If you don't make sure your family understands, then you run the risk of family members feeling neglected, disputes over money or someone feeling as though they are contributing more to the family in terms of time. It will also lead to productivity problems due to disruptions and distractions.

2. Another important consideration for starting your own business with a small child is where you deciding where you will work. It's critical that you choose an area that you are comfortable in but can also accommodate your baby because you need to have your baby at the minimum at hear shot if not in eye view. If you make sure that you are fine and have your baby within reach, then you'll will minimize the time away from your work area and not worry about something happening to your baby..

3. You don't have to send your child to child care of hire a baby sitter in order to run your own business. I have a total of seven children and I have never used daycare or a baby sitter since starting my business in 2003. All you need to do is to set up a schedule, and make sure that you make sure you stick to it. I found that I am most productive from 4 am to 9 am and again from 9 pm until bedtime. These are also the times that my younger children are asleep. This makes a perfect time to do my tasks that I need to concentrate on. So, set your schedule at times you will be most productive and have little distractions.

4. Instead of complicating your business start-up efforts by jumping in head first, be sure you first have a plan. Understand the business you are trying to start. Know that it will take time and dedication. Understand your competition and know that there may be some times that you may not be able to spend as much time with your family as you would like.

5. Schedule what is important to you first. I attend school plays, award ceremonies, soccer games, school parties, etc. I never miss any of these because I consider these things important to me. So treat those as appointments and schedule them first.

So if you really want to start your business with a new baby, follow these tips maximize your chances for success.

How to Win Pro Picks - Box Play Increases Your Odds of Winning

If You Play Pro Picks in Ontario, you probably know that for a wager, you have a chance to win thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of dollars. Pro Picks is offered by OLG (Ontario Lottery And Gaming Corporation) and to win it, you have to predict the outcomes of, usually, 12-15 games, be it football, hockey, soccer, or baseball. The person (or people) that correctly guess the outcomes of most of the games wins the prize pool. Wouldn't you like to be able to increase your odds of winning Pro Picks? The best way to do that is through "box play."

I'll get to box play in a moment. First consider this - Don't you hate it when you come really close to winning on Pro Picks, but you miss it by getting just one or two games wrong? That sucks. But don't feel to bad, because the odds of picking, say, 13-out-of-13 games correctly are quite bad. Actually, let's assume that picking the winner of any single game is a 50-50 chance (This isn't really true because some teams are better than others, so they are more likely to win. But let's stick with 50-50 for simplicity's sake). If you had to make 13 choices and each was a 50-50 shot, the odds of you picking all 13 correctly are approximately 1-in-8192. That's means it's probably harder to win than you think. Now, throw box play into the mix and the odds change considerably.

Box play in Pro Picks allows you to select up to four games and box them. That means, no matter what, you automatically get these games no matter which team wins. Of course, the more games you box, the more it costs to play. Let's say you box 4 games. That would mean that you, now, have to predict the outcomes of just 9 games. What do you think that would do to your odds of winning? That would lower your odds to just approximately 1-in-512. Much better than the 1-in-8192 that you first started with, isn't it?

So then, that means that box play on Pro Picks is the best way to increase your odds of winning!

Inside Soccer Games Require Indoor Soccer Cleats

Soccer players use specialized shoes when they get out there and play. Professionals and hobbyists need to gear up with the right pair so they can run and kick the ball without any hassle. The shoes have to conform to every twist and turn they make on the field and should be as hardworking as their owners.

Soccer cleats are specifically designed for these specialized players. There are cleats for outside field games and there are indoor soccer cleats.

If the game is played outside, your cleats have studs that help obtain a good grip on the ground when running around. When you're inside, the shoes do not have studs. They are mostly flat rubber on the sole and are padded inside to support the arch of the feet. Most are made of leather because this material forms around the foot and allows free movement.

You need more traction when participating indoors to avoid slipping. They should be more flexible to participate on a different playing ground. They also need to be comfortable and functional when playing as a professional or simply having fun. The right gear should protect from injury especially in an indoor arena where you could get severely injured joints.

Indoor arenas are mostly made of artificial turf. Players can slide and slip because of the material used for the turf, which is similar to plastic. Indoor soccer shoes feature soles made of flat rubber with patterns that allow one to freely move without worrying about sliding or falling. Wearing the appropriate shoes for the kind of venue will help you improve your game.

You could run and do cuts and jukes well because of having better traction. This allows you to display your skills as a player because you have good balance. Your foot gear allows you to use your feet according to the necessary moves you have to make on the field - kick, run, or pass the ball.

There are stores that specialize in indoor soccer shoes. High-quality cleats could be expensive because they are made for very specific purpose. If you're thinking of just using outdoor equipment instead, think again. Outdoor cleats are not made for the inside arena because the studded shoes will not work well on the gym-like flooring of an indoor arena. One is much better off buying the indoor soccer shoes if they want to play their best for an inside game.

NFL and Social Networking

The NFL is driven by their media coverage. For millions of fans around the world the media is the only way they are able to connect with their favorite NFL teams or to watch all of the games that are played within the NFL season. The actual number of people who physically buy a ticket and go watch an NFL game in person, pales in comparison to the number of people that watch the games every Sunday on television. If it were not for the media the sport of professional football simply would not exist in its current capacity.

Many people complain about the coverage that a lot of NFL games get and they complain that they are no longer able to watch these games because they have been moved to Cable, or because they do not like the announcer that is calling the game, but the bottom line is that if it were not for these media outlets that broadcast the game these same fans would be left in the dark and not be able to watch their favorite teams play at all.

The NFL and the media have had a close relationship since the sport began. With networks such as ESPN giving around the clock coverage to the NFL it is no surprise that the media has taken a leading role in the NFL. The media that surrounds the NFL also come in many forms other than television. There are entire magazines dedicated strictly to the NFL. There are websites, newspapers, subscription services, and merchandise shops that all have begun as a result of the NFL and its popularity among fans. The media is tasked with getting the word out about the NFL and fans are gobbling up every available bit of information as fast as the media outlets can put it out.

Without the media the NFL would be a black hole. We might hear about a game from a friend of a friend who attended the game but we would not know what was happening unless we lived close to an NFL stadium. Media has made the world a lot smaller and we are now able to connect with people from across the country and be on the same platform about what is happening in the NFL. The media attention that comes with the Super Bowl each year is the largest media event every year. The network that broadcasts the big game brings in incredible amounts of revenue for the commercial spots and it should come as no surprise that the teams and the networks make a lot of money as well. The NFL and the media could not live without each other and they will do everything to protect each other.

Quarterbacks - Cross Train Your Way to Better Balance and Footwork

Well it's that time of year again... early spring. Now that the weather is starting to get nice again, it's time for quarterbacks to grab their football and begin their offseason workouts. Now I do realize that even youth football is rapidly becoming a year round sport, something I'm against, but it's time to start thinking about the fall.
I happen to be a big fan of children playing multiple sports, but all complementing each other. My own children obviously play football in the fall. During the winter months, I like them to wrestle.

Wrestling builds strength and endurance, teaches balance and leverage like no other. They are also avid skiers and snow boarders. Skiing and snow boarding builds leg and core muscle and improves balance. During the spring they will play a sport that emphasizes running, like lacrosse. The continuous starting, stopping and going at a full sprint will do wonders for their endurance and leg explosion for change of direction. All sports will help in footwork.

Basketball, lacrosse and soccer are all free form sports, meaning the kids all read the defense and move to the open space to create the best chance of scoring. This offers multiple opportunities to teach kids the benefit of the current sport to football. Everyone gets to be the quarterback because when he has the ball he has to find the open receiver. This gives everyone the opportunity to look at the game through the quarterback's eyes to see the pressure he is under at the start of every play and hopefully gives them a greater appreciation of just what he does.

Everyone gets to play wide receiver because they need to learn how to read coverage to get open. But what I've really found the most helpful is the understanding of defense. By playing these free form sports the athlete gets a much better feel for a zone defense. This helps everyone because everyone must play defense, not a necessity in football. Playing defense will help the quarterback because he learns what the weak spot in the defense is because he is forced to be aware of the weakness in his own defense to prevent the other team from scoring.

These are just some of the great advantages of playing other sports during the year. Doctor's have recommended for years that children not play one sport year round in order to give certain muscle groups a rest because every sport uses different muscle groups. This approach limits the chance for sport specific injuries not to mention burn out. Keep your children active, show them how each sport will benefit another and hopefully you will be able to keep them interested in a health active lifestyle for the rest of their lives.

How Promotional Mouse Mats Can Be a Great Promotional Tool

If you have been considering promotional gifts for your organization, promotional mouse mats are an excellent choice. They have a large printable area for your company information, so your message is prominently displayed and constantly looked at. Printed mouse mats make great promotional gifts because so many people use computers. They can be given to clients and customers, as well as your employees. There are many advantages to gifting people with custom mouse mats and in this article I will be discussing a few of them.

Printed mouse pads are very practical and can be used by anyone. Mouse pads are replaced often due to dirtiness and wear so most people will appreciate getting a new one. Because they are flat and sit on a desk right in front of the user they will see your message often.

The design options for corporate mouse mats are virtually limitless. You can have just about anything printed on them, including your company logo and colors, your slogan, web address and pictures of your products. They are available in different shapes, from round to oval, square to rectangular. A sports club such as a football team can use a mouse mat that is round and designed like a soccer ball and emblazened with the team logo. An electronics retailer might choose a rectangle shaped mouse pad that is printed to look like a television. The only limit is your imagination.

Because mouse mats are thin and light they are much easier to store and ship than many other promotional gifts. Perhaps you employ outside sales representatives that cover a large territory. Having a box of mouse pads does not take up much space in a vehicle, while boxes of mugs can be cumbersome and use up valuable space, not to mention the fact that they can be broken.

Finally, promotional mouse mats make great promotional gifts because of their price. You want your marketing budget to have as much impact as possible and custom mouse pads deliver for a relatively low cost. Many items people receive as promotional gifts are useless and not greatly appreciated and thrown away after just a few days. When you give a mouse mat as a promotional gift you are giving something useful that its recipient can and will use everyday. If you want as many eyes to see your message as possible without breaking the bank then consider custom mouse pads for your next branding campaign.
