While getting to watch a favorite team triumph on game day is always appreciated, sometimes there simply isn't anything on worth watching. And during these lulls in activity, there often needs to be a different option available, lest those fans at home who are missing out on the action start reliving past triumphs and failures with the various ESPN Classic options out there. But what's an aficionado of the game to do when there is only curling on television? The answer is simpler than some might think: turn to the world of movies.
With so many different channels out there on satellite tv offering up thousands of different movies at any given moment, it's no surprise that at least a few dozen of the picks might revolve around the world of athletes and their favorite sports. Whether it happens to be a biopic based on a South American soccer star or a fictional account of one southern football team's rise to triumph despite some challenges stacked against them, the world of sports cinema is varied and exciting. And when truly great sports films are made, sometimes things are done so well that it feels just as exciting as game day itself.
Whether focusing on an obscure sport that might not make as much sense or reliving a real-life victory in fictionalized form, here are some fantastic movies about athletics for those times when the game is not yet on.
The Replacements. Keanu Reeves leads up a squad of has-been football players who are a bit more rough and tumble. Think of it as a "Bad News Bears" for grown-ups, and set in the early 2000s. While not the best movie made about football ever, the action sequences that involve down-to-the-wire moments on the field get the adrenaline of sports fans going just like a real game would.
Jerry Maguire. Less about the action on the field and more about the action in the world of one rogue sports agent, who is trying to keep his clients happy while also making a name for himself. Before their was Ari Gold on "Entourage," the most popular agent onscreen was Tom Cruise in this role, for which was surprisingly suited.
Chariots of Fire. Because not all movies about athletics should be focused on team sports. This ode to running was one of the most popular films of 1981, and managed to win an Oscar for Best Picture. While one particular slow-motion sequence has been parodied again and again, this is still a film well worth watching, and the athletics sequences are as incredible as the rest of the cinematography.
Prefontaine. Adorable actor Jared Leto plays the shaggy-haired track star of the 1970s, who was one of the first to make the sport into a national point of interest. The best kind of biopic, with lots of attention paid to sports sequences, as well as moments of drama outside of the competition.
Teen Wolf. Okay, so this film starring Michael J. Fox is more of a great 1980s comedy than anything else, but the fantastic climactic end scene, which involves teen wolf's ability to bring it on the basketball court, makes it a great pick for those who enjoy their campy 80s flicks with a little bit of athletics on the side.
