Exercise For Kids - Get Them Outdoors

Exercise for kids obviously is beneficial for children's health. Outdoor exercise helps youngsters burn up their seemingly unending energy. My toddler did not at first relish the idea of spending time among the squirmy bugs, prickly grass and lawnmower noises. How can you get your kid off the couch and in the fresh air?

Make exercise a fun experience. Do not force your kid to spend 15 to 30 minutes three times per week on a child's treadmill or elliptical trainer. Yes, these do exist. If your child recognizes exercise as exercise, he probably is not going to want to do it.

Take a box of "exercise" and repackage it into something called a "game." Hiking, skipping, gymnastics, dancing, pool games, soccer and many other activities keep children on the move, rather than being stuck with sedentary entertainment. Perhaps you like power walking, but the idea bores your 8-year-old. Expend his energy and other neighborhood kids with a rousing game of duck, duck, goose.

Other great exercise for kids includes playing kickball, wiffle ball, spending time at the playground, climbing trees, playing hopscotch, jumping rope and riding a tricycle. If your child spends most of his waking hours in front of a television, the outdoors might appear as foreign turf. He will need to imitate your great, encouraging attitude toward outdoor activities. So, be positive and turn off the boob tube for a while. Exercise for kids does not have to elaborate; it simply should be fun.

Furthermore, there's no need to set a rigid exercise schedule for your child. Just focus on having fun with him. If he gets tired after 15 minutes, let him rest or stop all together. A daily dose of 15-minute activity can go a long way for the both of you.
